Accomplished Industrialist. – Chartered Mechanical Engineer & Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Current Positions with the Institution – Founder of the Design Challenge & Chairman of the Power Industries Division North West Centre.
His career commenced with an apprenticeship after which he moved into the drawing office at Thomas Ryder & Son Machine Tool makers. After 5 years he moved to the Qualitex Group as Mechanical Engineer and was promoted to Group Project Engineer.
David moved to Automotive Products as Chief Industrial Engineer and then to the Vickers Engineering Group as General Works Manager of their Automated Systems Division.
In 1976 Dr Ball joined the “Syltone plc Group” as Managing Director of Webster Drives Ltd who manufacture gearboxes for commercial Vehicles, he later became Managing Director of Rotocold Ltd (refrigeration compressor manufacturers), and Managing Director of Drum International manufactures of compressors, blowers, pumps and hydraulic equipment all in the Syltone Group.
In 1995 David was appointed to a director of the main Board of Syltone Industries plc responsible for manufacture worldwide.
He took early retirement in 2000, and for the next 5 years he was Executive Chairman of a major Training Company followed by 14 months as stand in Managing Director of a local company.

Dr Ball has been associated with numerous voluntary activities over the years.
The Design Challenge
I founded the Challenge in 2007/2008 because I wanted to find a way of exposing undergraduate engineers to the real world of Engineering whereby, they had to think for themselves and produce a design solution to an Engineering requirement.
The challenge involves all of the necessary aspects of the Engineering discipline, from technical concept and design to final build and test, whilst managing budgets, teamwork, presenting results and meeting a final deadline. The regional heats and the national final in London add a competitive element giving the students a real insight to alternatively developed solutions, and hence improving their communication skills, confidence and experience significantly beyond what would normally be gained in a typical lab practical.
The Design Challenge covers the key requirements of a Professional Engineer and gives the students an insight into what will be expected of them when they graduate.
IMechE Design Challenge: Industry Partner, Ansys
We are pleased to announce that Design Challenge 2024 has an added element in the form of a Simulation Challenge in conjunction with our event partner Ansys.
Simulation helps designers and engineers optimise product performance, speed up development while reducing prototyping costs, resources and effort. More and more companies are looking for graduates with these vital skills!
Against this backdrop, the Ansys Simulation Challenge will run alongside Design Challenge 2024, and there will be regional finalists who will then compete at the National Final too.
Visit the Ansys Simulation Challenge webpage for full details of this new, exciting competition.
Meet our judges
Bridget Ogwezi: Senior Strategic Project Manager, Ansys and IMechE Design Challenge Industry Liaison
Davide Migliorini: Senior Lead EngineerSteering Committee Chair, Evolito Ltd and IMechE Design Challenge Steering Committee Chair
Davide has 21 years of experience in automotive, starting from racing into volume production passenger cars, and 4 in aerospace, on mechanical design of electric motors and controllers.
The early years spent as industrial consulting, designer and support engineer in motorcycle Superbike, Super Sport, Endurance and finally in F1 were instrumental to gain pace, weight reduction and simple design skills. While working on passenger cars for series production as Principal Engineer, Davide was main originator of 3 patents.
Davide’s vision is that people come first, by building their confidence through professional development and new technologies explorations. With a cultural background in Italy, UK and Spain, Davide could be agile in a multicultural environment.
Matt Lister: Head of the UK Defence Nuclear Safety Regulator, UK Ministry of Defence and IMechE Design Challenge Head Judge
Matt Lister grew up in Ulverston, South Cumbria and completed an Admiralty Interview Board in 1998 at the tender age of 15. He studied Mechanical Engineering at Southampton University as a Naval Bursar, before joining BRNC as a Direct Graduate Entrant in 2004. Although Young Officer time was spent with ALBION and ILLUSTRIOUS, he streamed early as a Submariner and has remained within the SSN force throughout his career, serving as Assistant Engineer Officer in SWIFTSURE Class and then as Head of Department with ASTUTE Class.
Away from Sea Appointments, Matt has worked within the DREADNOUGHT Next Generation Nuclear Propulsion Programme and within the Submarine Flotilla as Staff Marine Engineer Officer to COMSUBFLOT. More recently he has served in the Submarine Delivery Agency as Military Assistant to Director Submarine Acquisition, before moving across to lead the Safety Team within the Nuclear Propulsion Directorate. A grateful beneficiary of military education, he attended sponsored degrees with UCL (Marine Engineering) and KCL (Defence Studies) and continues to support academia as Head Judge for the IMechE University Design Challenge.
A Royal Navy D&I Advocate and Parent Governor with Sir John Barrow Primary School, Matt still lives in Ulverston with wife Kim and children Isabelle, William and Jack – who are all immensely proud their dad is “one of the good pirates”.
Dave Terry FIMechE BSc MSc: Senior Engineer, Coleman Milne – Woodal Nicholson Group and IMechE North Western Region Chair
Dave is a chartered Mechanical Engineer and a Fellow of the IMechE. He was awarded a degree by Silsoe College Cranfield and an MSc from Bolton University. Dave’s specialism is the design, manufacture, testing and approval of specialist vehicles including Trucks, Buses, Coaches, Minibuses, WAV’s, vehicles for the Emergency Services and for the Funeral Industry, rising to Director of Engineering. Dave also enjoyed the opportunity to work in the Oil and Gas Industry before returning to Automotive as a consultant and employee. Dave has been involved with a number of design and make challenges including STEM events and Formula Student as well as the Design Challenge, the latter is probably nearest aligned to his day job in that an engineering challenge is set, budget and time are restricted a detail design is completed and some manufacturing and assembly completed before proving and sign off. Nothing gives Dave greater joy than seeing a design through from concept to production.
